A Journey Through Northern India
Memories from a Bucket List Adventure
It’s been a few years now since our amazing “bucket list” adventure through India — but the memories still glow as vividly as the colours of a Rajasthani market. Some trips get forgotten with time, but this one? It’s safely stored in my “happy memory file”, ready to pull out on those grey days when I need a reminder of just how big and beautiful the world can be.

The Magic of Northern India
Our Northern India tour took us through a whirlwind of culture, colour, and contrasts — from the spiritual calm of the Ganges to the glorious chaos of Delhi traffic. Each stop was a world of its own, layered with history, emotion, and sensory overload in the very best way.
Here are just a few of the unforgettable highlights that made this trip so special:

The Taj Mahal – What a Spectacular Sight
Nothing quite prepares you for your first glimpse of the Taj Mahal. It’s one of those rare places that exceeds every expectation. We were dropped off nearby into the usual busy chaos of street vendors and tourist groups before walking the short distance to the Darwaza-i-rauza or “Great Gate. Arriving early in the morning and as the light hit the white marble, the Taj Mahal had a beautiful pink hazy glow. The crowds flowed though each area without feeling overcrowded, and wandering the grounds even in busy areas, there was plenty of room for peace and quiet contemplation.

The Red Fort – A Walk Through History
We walked the cobbled route up to the magnificent Red Fort. This intricate complex of palaces is one of the most important historical structures in Delhi. Wandering inside, you could imagine the emperors, courtiers, soldiers and servants of the past. Its vast sandstone walls tells the story of Mughal grandeur, and the craftsmanship is truly breath-taking — every archway, every carving a reminder of India’s magnificent heritage.

Jaipur – The Pink City of Dreams
Jaipur dazzled us at first sight. From the ornate Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) to the bustling bazaars brimming with textiles, jewels and flowers, the city radiated warmth and wonder. Wandering through its streets we experienced daily life, filled with laughter, colour, and the waft of spices. From here, we also visited the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Centre 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫. Built in the early 18th century, it’s one of the oldest astronomical observatories, and includes the world’s largest stone sundial within it’s 19 main fixed instruments. It is no longer a working science centre but is maintained as a monument, and education sessions, guided tours and music and light shows, are organized here.

Khajuraho – Where Art and Spirit Collide
The Khajuraho Temples were unexpected and unforgettable — a celebration of life in its most artistic form. The intricate carvings depicting human connection, love, and devotion were as bold as they were beautiful. It was a fascinating visit to see how spirituality and sensuality intertwined in these ancient carvings.

Varanasi – The Soul of India
If there’s one place that truly stayed with me, it’s Varanasi. We went on a sunrise boat trip on the River Ganges and saw pilgrims bathe while candles floated on the water. In the evening we returned to the river again for sunset and to see the Ganga Aarti — a spiritual Hindu ceremony performed daily at dusk on the banks of the Ganges River. This day, the most emotional part of our trip, was humbling, emotional, and profoundly human.

New Delhi – A City That Never Sleeps
Our tour began and ended In magnificent New Delhi, a city that buzzes 24/7. On arrival, there was was without doubt, an initial shock to the senses. Yet, when we returned from our tour of Rajasthan, it felt comfortably familiar. Delhi is a place where ancient history and modern life collide — old majestic tombs beside shining skyscrapers, street food carts next to fine dining restaurants. Delhi is a city that demands to be felt, not just seen.

Beyond the Landmarks: The Essence of India
But what truly lingers long after the photos fade aren’t just the monuments — it’s the moments in between.
The waft of chai brewing at a roadside stall.
The sounds of temple bells echoing through the bustling rush of life.
The explosion of colour in every market.
The taste of spicy curries and buttery naan.
The smiles of locals who turned every encounter into a story worth remembering.
India doesn’t just show you its beauty — it immerses you in it.

Forever in the “Happy Memory File”
Trips like this remind us why we travel — to see, to feel, to learn, and to connect. Northern India was a journey that awakened every sense and stirred my soul.
Even now, when life feels ordinary, I only need to close my eyes and think of the Taj Mahal glowing at dawn, or the chants on the Ganges at sunset, and I’m right back there — in the heart of India, where magic and meaning meet. One day, I shall return !
