Ambassador Cruise Line is a British cruise company with a clear mission: to deliver authentic, no-fly, premium-value cruising from the UK, all within a warm and welcoming onboard atmosphere. Sailing on relatively small ships by today’s standards, Ambassador offers a more personal cruising experience and stands out for its multiple UK departure ports. Guests can join cruises from London Tilbury (the primary home port), as well as Newcastle, Dundee, Liverpool, Belfast, Bristol, Falmouth, and Portsmouth — making it easier for travellers across Britain to set sail closer to home.
Ambassador cruises are primarily aimed at the over-50s market, although a limited number of multi-generational sailings are available during school holidays, allowing families to cruise together. The line launched its first ship, Ambience, in April 2022, followed by Ambition in May 2023. After merging with Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC) in January 2025 and rebranding as Ambassador Group, the company expanded its fleet with a third ship, Renaissance. Alongside this growth, Ambassador has also introduced a Caribbean fly-cruise programme — a new addition beyond its traditional UK no-fly cruise offerings.
Because Ambassador Cruise Line operates smaller ships compared to mega cruise liners, sailing on Ambassador Ambition feels noticeably more intimate and relaxed—ideal for travellers seeking a quieter, less crowded cruise experience. The onboard atmosphere is best described as classic, comfortable and social, with a strong emphasis on affordable quality cruising and a warm, traditional British welcome. This style of cruising makes Ambassador Cruises particularly appealing to guests who value comfort, good service, and a friendly onboard community over flashy attractions.
Choice Of Departure Points
Starting in Belfast, this particular Ambassador cruise itinerary was chosen specifically to accommodate my elderly dad’s mobility limitations and his firm unwillingness to fly. With him living in Dublin and us based in the North West of England, finding a simple and stress-free way to travel together was essential. Ambassador’s UK and Ireland departure ports offered the perfect solution: Dad boarded Ambition in Belfast, while we joined the ship in Liverpool the following day, making the whole process remarkably easy.
As this was a last-minute booking, and driven very much by practical needs, we boarded with the mindset of “we’ll make the most of it, whatever it’s like.” That said, we had already read several Ambassador Ambition reviews, most of which spoke highly of the food, service, and relaxed onboard experience—so we did have some positive expectations going in, particularly when it came to dining and hospitality.
Pre-Cruise Planning with Ambassador Cruise Line
After registering on Ambassador Cruise Line’s easy-to-use website using our booking reference, we followed the clear step-by-step checklist to complete all required information, including passport and health details. Communication was excellent throughout — with regular emails providing helpful information and reminders.
Check-in opened 72 hours before sailing, allowing us to complete the final steps online and print our boarding passes and luggage labels in advance. The whole pre-cruise process felt straightforward, well organised, and reassuring — a great start to our cruise on Ambition.
Embarkation Day at Liverpool Cruise Terminal
Arriving at Liverpool Cruise Terminal slightly ahead of our allocated boarding time, we were greeted by friendly porters who quickly unloaded our luggage for transfer to the ship. By the time Paul returned from parking nearby, our boarding group was already being called — a little ahead of schedule.
With my FOMO fully engaged, we joined the short, fast-moving queue. Within minutes, our photos were taken and our Ambassador cruise cards issued. These cards act as your cabin key, onboard payment method, and a record of when you leave or return to the ship.
The embarkation and security process was efficient, friendly, and genuinely welcoming — setting the tone for the rest of the cruise.
First Impressions of Ambition
Stepping off the gangway onto Ambition, the warm and friendly welcome was immediate. It was just before 1pm, and we were advised that cabins would be ready by 2pm. Lunch was already being served in Borough Market, Ambition’s self-service buffet restaurant.
While we could have relaxed elsewhere on board, we headed straight for lunch to get into the cruise groove. As expected on embarkation day, Borough Market was busy and tables were in high demand — partly due to some guests using the space as a waiting area. Thankfully, a couple kindly freed up a table so my dad could sit while I explored the food stations.
The choice was impressive: starters, soups, hot meat and fish dishes, vegetarian options, salads, sandwiches, hot puddings, chilled desserts, cakes, a dedicated gluten-free section, and a fully plant-based station. Tea, coffee, and water were freely available, and a table service bar drinks were offered throughout. It was an excellent introduction to dining on board Ambition.
Cabins on Ambition – Ocean View Comfort
Shortly after entering our cabin, our steward arrived with our luggage and gave us a warm introduction to the room. He showed us where to find the tea tray, hairdryer, pool towels, laundry bags, safe, and how to access ship information and daily programmes via the TV. While none of this was essential, it was a lovely personal touch and a great way to meet the person looking after us.
We booked two Ocean View cabins on Deck 9 — one double and one twin for my dad. The twin cabin offered more floor space and a better window outlook, as the double bed configuration sits directly beneath the window. Storage was generous, with wardrobes, shelves, and drawers. There were ample UK sockets and a USB port, and our large suitcases slid easily under the beds.
The cabins were bright, quiet, and extremely comfortable. I slept better than I had in a long time, thanks to a wonderfully comfortable mattress and dreamy pillows. The en-suite bathroom was compact but bright, with a step-in shower and refillable toiletry dispensers.
Restaurants and Food on Ambition
Buckingham Restaurant
The Buckingham Restaurant is the larger of Ambition’s two main dining rooms. Breakfast and lunch are buffet-style, with your selected main course served to the table at lunch. Dinner is a more formal affair, offering up to five courses from an à la carte menu, accompanied by a good wine selection.
Dining times and tables are pre-allocated, but the staff were incredibly accommodating. We were able to switch from an early sitting at a small aisle table to a later sitting at a large window table — a change that transformed our dining experience. Every meal was outstanding, with so much variety that we never saw the same dish twice.
Holyrood Restaurant
A smaller main dining room, Holyrood is open for dinner only and offers the same high standard of food and service in a slightly more intimate setting.
Borough Market
This relaxed buffet restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. It’s ideal if you want flexible dining times or a more casual meal.
Alfresco Grill
Located on the covered pool deck, the Alfresco Grill serves burgers, pizzas, hot dogs, chips, salads, and snacks — perfect for a quick bite between activities or a laid-back lunch by the pool.
Speciality Dining on Ambition (Additional Charge)
Saffron Restaurant
We thoroughly enjoyed dining at Saffron, Ambition’s Indian speciality restaurant. The food was beautifully presented and full of flavour. I chose a mixed starter, the Royal Maharaja Thali, and a mini dessert selection — all superb. Others opted for samosas and seekh kebab, followed by lamb rogan josh and butter chicken, finished with Indian rice pudding and carrot halwa trifle.
At around £15 per person, Saffron offers excellent value for money and is absolutely worth booking.
Chef’s Table
We treated ourselves to the Chef’s Table experience — and it was unforgettable. After gathering in Bronty’s Library for a champagne and canapé reception, we enjoyed a fascinating behind-the-scenes galley tour before sitting down to a multi-course tasting menu with perfectly paired wines. Hosted by the Executive Chef and Restaurant Manager, it was a truly special evening.
Lupino’s
Lupino’s is a Mediterranean-style restaurant offering sharing dishes such as mezze, salads, and light Mediterranean fare. While we didn’t dine here ourselves, friends we met on board spoke very highly of it.
Entertainment and Activities on Ambition
There is a non-stop programme of entertainment on Ambition, running from early morning until late at night. Often, I found myself choosing between two or three activities happening at the same time.

Pools and Sun Decks
Ambition features two sea-water pools — one ideal for swimming short lengths, and another thermal-style pool with bubbles and fountains. There are also two elevated hot tubs, plenty of loungers, shaded seating areas, and a vibrant pool deck atmosphere.
Several lively deck parties took place here, with live music and dancing hosted by the entertainment team — all great fun and wonderfully inclusive.
Final Thoughts
Cruising with Ambassador Cruise Line aboard Ambition proved to be far more than simply a convenient, no-fly holiday from the UK — it was a genuinely memorable and rewarding experience. From the smooth embarkation process and welcoming crew to the excellent food, varied entertainment and relaxed, social atmosphere, this cruise delivered exactly what Ambassador promises: authentic, premium-value cruising with a traditional British feel.
For us, the flexibility of multiple UK departure ports made all the difference, allowing two generations to come together easily without the stress of flying. The smaller ship size created a more intimate, uncrowded experience, while still offering plenty of choice — from speciality dining at Saffron and the unforgettable Chef’s Table, to live music, enrichment lectures and thoughtful accessibility throughout the ship.
Ambition is particularly well-suited to over-50s cruising, travellers seeking a calmer pace, and anyone looking for a friendly, classic cruise experience without sacrificing comfort or quality. That said, with multi-generational sailings available and such a broad range of onboard activities, it’s easy to see why Ambassador Cruise Line is quickly building a loyal following.
Would we sail with Ambassador again? Without hesitation. Ambition struck the perfect balance between comfort, value, and connection — not just to the destinations, but to each other.
